Program


The Micro-Enterprise Development Program (MEDEP) is a project implemented by His Majesty's Government, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, with technical and financial supports of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The program was initiated in July 1998. The goal of the program is to develop a common approach to performance measurement for Micro-Enterprise development and services programs targeted towards people living on the edge of poverty. The program is today in its third year of implementation. This program has been implemented under phases covering ten districts across Nepal. The program initiated its activities in three districts, Nawalparasi, Nuwakot and Parbat from the third quarter of 1998 under the firstphase plan while MEDEP programs in Baitadi, Dhanusha, Sunsari and Terahthum were initiated in 1999. The first quarter of this year saw program implementation in Dadeldhura, Dang and Pyuthan district, bringing the total number of districts under MEDEP to ten. The UNDP’s role in the program is to help the government in its endeavor to create income and employment generating opportunities through micro-Enterprise development to reduce poverty. However, its objective is only to help create a success story and set an example that can be replicated and followed by others.
It has become popular to address income and employment opportunities to support Nepal poverty reduction efforts. With agreement signed between NEDC Branch office, Rolpa (Till 31 July 2010) and then the strategy of the MEDEP to select and need registered local NGO, DECOS as BDSPO & MEDEP works with its implementing partner organizations through sub-contracting policy at district level for program implementation. The MEDEP formed DEDC based MOU in leadership of the chairperson of Local Development Officer in the district and signed a MOU among and the ministry of industries Nepal Government. The MEDEP collaboration with the DEDC subcontracted the program out to the BDSPO based on the MOU member for actually implementation program. The MEDEP mobilized the NEDC and DECOS under subcontracted for program planning and submit to overall proposal of activities and budget to the NPSO MEDEP through the DDC & APSO in 2010.
