The Micro-Enterprise Development Program (MEDEP) is a project implemented by His Majesty's Government, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, with technical and financial supports of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The program was initiated in July 1998. The goal of the program is to develop a common approach to performance measurement for Micro-Enterprise development and services programs targeted towards people living on the edge of poverty. The program is today in its third year of implementation. This program has been implemented under phases covering ten districts across Nepal. The program initiated its activities in three districts, Nawalparasi, Nuwakot and Parbat from the third quarter of 1998 under the firstphase plan while MEDEP programs in Baitadi, Dhanusha, Sunsari and Terahthum were initiated in 1999. The first quarter of this year saw program implementation in Dadeldhura, Dang and Pyuthan district, bringing the total number of districts under MEDEP to ten. The UNDP’s role in the program is to help the government in its endeavor to create income and employment generating opportunities through micro-Enterprise development to reduce poverty. However, its objective is only to help create a success story and set an example that can be replicated and followed by others.
